Ash Class Visit The National Coal Mining Museum
Ash class has really enjoyed participating in the National Coal Mining Museum Victorian Miners workshop.
We learnt about what life was like as a Victorian child, the types of jobs the children did down the mine, the equipment they used and we also meet a miner who told us about her life down the mine. We made a ‘Motty’ which the miner explained that each family would place in the bottom of the cart to ensure they get paid and it would have their house number on. We learned a folk song together with actions and dressed up in Victorian clothes.
The National Coal Mining Museum sent us some coal to explore and smelly tubs of the types of smell associated with the Victorian era ‘coal fire, pit pony, steam engine, etc.’
