One of our Y5 students, Raife, has been making incredible progress in football and continues to shine as part of the Sheffield United Academy, where he plays as a goalkeeper.
Raife’s journey at Sheffield United began in July 2022, when he was spotted by scouts during his very first match for glassroots team Westfield Rangers. His performance led to an invitation to a six-week trial, where he quickly stood out and earned a place in the Pre-Academy U7s squad.
In September 2023, Raife was offered a two-year contract with the Academy, starting with the 2024/25 season – a huge achievement for someone so young!
“My dad inspired me to play football as he used to play for Sheffield Wednesday when he was younger. I also look up to Sheffield United’s goalkeeper, Michael Cooper.”
Raife started playing football around six years old, and his passion for the goalkeeping position has only grown since. His favourite part of playing for Sheffield United is making saves, as well enjoying the teamwork and travelling to matches across the country. Most recently, he played in Newcastle!
Balancing football and school isn’t easy – he trains three times a week with matches every weekend. But he remains determined to give his best in both areas.
One of his proudest memories so far came at Kiveton Park, where he faced his dad in a game and managed to save one of his powerful shots.
Raife’s advice to other students who want to play football is:
“Believe in yourself and join a team. Practice makes perfect.”
Looking ahead, Raife dreams of one day playing professional football for Sheffield United, and hopes to repay his family for all the support they have given him.
Mrs Burton, Associate Headteacher at Aston Lodge Primary School, said: “Everyone at Aston Lodge is extremely proud of Raife and his achievements at Sheffield United Academy. He is incredibly talented and we cannot wait to see what the future has in store for him!”
We are all excited to follow Raife’s journey and can’t wait to see what he goes on to achieve. Superstar!
