Literacy in FS2

This week in FS2, the children explored the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood. They focused on sequencing the key events and retelling the story in their own words, helping to develop their understanding of narrative structure and strengthen their spoken language skills.

The children identified and illustrated the villain from the story, thinking carefully about his appearance and behaviour. They then used their ideas to write descriptive sentences, applying their phonics knowledge to spell words accurately and communicate meaning in their writing.

During a Choose to Learn session, the children independently extended their learning by using small world figures to retell the story, showing growing confidence in recalling events and using story specific language. They also built and labelled their own cottages, creating props to support storytelling and imaginative play.

These activities have supported the children’s development in communication and language, literacy, and expressive arts and design. Well done, FS2!
