Last week, FS2 children enjoyed exploring the traditional story of Hansel and Gretel during their literacy sessions. Through the story, they developed their speaking and listening skills, story understanding, and early writing.
The children took part in story walks, using pictures to identify the main characters, the setting and the problem in the story. They shared their ideas in clear sentences and grew in confidence as the story was revisited throughout the week. With support, they practised using new vocabulary and speaking in full sentences.
During reading time, the children also discussed the characters’ choices and how these made them feel, thinking carefully about whether actions were kind or unkind. By the end of the week, they were able to write simple sentences about the story, practising saying their sentence aloud, counting the words and writing them in a way that reflected their individual stage of learning. Well done!
