Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Your child’s class teacher this year is Mrs Howarth-Smith and the Teaching assistant is Mrs Cooley.

Year 1 is very much about building independence. So this year the children will be carefully introduced to a more formal curriculum. However, there will continue to be some play based learning and there will be plenty of practical ‘hands on’ learning throughout the year as this is how young children learn best.

Children will now follow the National Curriculum covering the areas of: English, Maths, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art and Design, Music, P.E, R.E and Personal, Social and Health Education. However, there will continue to be a very strong emphasis on developing core skills in English and Maths throughout the curriculum as these skills are vital for their future success and life chances.

As in the Foundation Stage your child will continue to bring home reading books on a regular basis. It is very important that they read these books at home with you. Children should read each book more than once as this helps them to recognise familiar words and develop more confidence and fluency in their reading – we encourage children to read at home at least 3 times per week. The more children read the more successful they will become.

Each week your child will bring home their homework journal containing a small list of spellings and addition facts to learn for immediate recall. Please spend 5 minutes each night practising these with your child. This will really help them with their learning and ensure that they don’t fall behind at this crucial part of their education.

P.E days this term are Monday and Thursday. Please can you ensure that your child has their P.E kit, including pumps or trainers in school. It is best for them to bring it on a Monday and leave it in school until Friday when it can be taken home for washing.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s education or their time in school don’t hesitate to call in and speak to me at the end of the school day.

We look forward to working with you and your child and being part of their learning journey.
